Elderly Couple Fight Off Knife-Wielding Burglar In 'Terrifying' Ordeal

The incident took place just after 10pm on Friday.

An elderly couple fought off a knife-wielding burglar who attempted to steal money from them.

The couple, in their 80s from Withington, Manchester, were sitting in their lounge on Friday night when they heard a knock at the front door.

When they answered, they were met with a man brandishing an 8-inch kitchen knife and demanding money, police said.

He forced his way into their home before they could fight back and lock the door.

The woman sustained a cut to her foot, while her husband had cuts on his arms caused during a scuffle and not by the weapon.

Both have been praised for their “remarkable bravery” during the incident.

Detective Constable Luke Raine of Greater Manchester Police said: “This was a terrifying burglary targeting two elderly members of our community.

“Through their remarkable bravery, they have managed to fight off the assailant and he fled empty handed.

“We would urge anyone with information on this to contact police immediately. Perhaps you saw someone matching the description of the offender in the vicinity at the time?

“Even the smallest detail can lead to new lines of enquiry that may help us identify the offender.”

The man has been described as white, aged 35 to 40 years old, 5ft 9ins tall and unshaven with stubble.

He was wearing dark clothing and a dark-coloured hood, police said.
