‘Frozen’ actress Idina Menzel has shared her thoughts on the social media campaign urging Disney to have Queen Elsa come out in the forthcoming sequel.

Idina - who provided the voice of Elsa and performed the Oscar-winning song ‘Let It Go’ in the original film - has said she’d be in favour of making the character the first openly LGBT character in a Disney film, after a social media campaign saw #GiveElsaAGirlfriend trending on Twitter last month.

She added that she would support Disney’s decision to introduce a female love interest for Elsa “no matter what”, claiming that her involvement in the first ‘Frozen’ film “changed her life”.

The call for Disney to introduce a girlfriend for Queen Elsa came after a report from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), which looked into the portrayal of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender characters in Hollywood films.

Last month, GLAAD revealed Disney were one of three major film studios who were falling short in terms of LGBT representation in their films, with the report suggesting that the ‘Star Wars’ franchise could be a good place for the organisation to start in terms of turning things around.

After much speculation, ‘Frozen 2’ was first confirmed to be in the works in March last year, after the original film, based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale ‘The Snow Queen’, proved to be Disney’s biggest success in years.

'Frozen' even managed to scoop an impressive two Academy Awards in 2014, for Best Original Song and Best Animated Feature.
