With three series and two Christmas specials already under its belt, Larry Lamb has big ideas about where Gavin & Stacey should go next.

The actor, who plays Mick Shipman, has called for the BBC sitcom to make the leap to the big screen, following the success of the recent festive episode.

Speaking to The Mirror, Larry said: “To me I always think the logical thing to do would be to make a film of it.

“I think the audience in Britain is so ready for it that they would go to the ends of the Earth to go and see a movie of it. I mean, imagine those characters? It’s so much larger than life now, it’s a national treasure.”

Larry has already called for the public to help put pressure on writers Ruth Jones and James Corden to deliver another series of Gavin & Stacey, after its recent special helped pull in the the largest Christmas Day ratings since 2008.

Some 11.6 million people tuned in to see the Shipmans and the Wests reunite on screen for the first time in 10 years on 25 December.

Responding to a fan on Twitter who had asked him to “please convince” Ruth and James to do another series, Larry tweeted: “Just keep up the pressure!!”

He added of the show’s mega ratings: “Well just to say how happy we all are that the show was as well received as we all guessed it would be … and thrilled to bits even so !! LoL.”

Last week, Ruth admitted even she “genuinely doesn’t know” what’s next for Smithy and Nessa following the cliffhanger ending in the Christmas special, which saw her getting down on one knee and proposing to him.

“You could go either way with it. It could be the most ridiculous thing, or it could be a marriage made in heaven,” she told The Sun.

“But don’t you think it would end the interest? If they did become a proper couple, would that spoil it? These are all questions that we ponder.”

While she recently said the cliffhanger ending left “room for more”, she also noted that getting the cast together for one special alone was a “challenge”.

“It’s a shame we didn’t have more time when we were writing so we could have written more, then have it all ready to go,” she added.

The Gavin & Stacey Christmas Special is available to stream now on BBC iPlayer.
