Government To Pay Full £9.8m Grant Requested By Greater Manchester Police

The Government will pay in full the £9.8 million special grant funding requested by Greater Manchester Police to recognise officers’ “extraordinary response” to the Manchester Arena terror attack, Downing Street said.

Theresa May’s official spokesman said: “The PM has been very clear the Government is absolutely committed to ensuring the victims of this attack and Greater Manchester have all possible support”.

The Government has now paid more than £13.7 million to help deal with the aftermath of the attack.

The Prime Minister has already promised the Government will fully fund the costs of dealing with the Manchester Arena bombing after criticism that an initial offer fell at least £5 million short of what local authorities said was needed.

Mrs May told the Manchester Evening News last month: “Be in no doubt, Manchester will get the financial support it needs – and if that costs £28 million, as Andy Burnham has estimated, then that is what we will make available.”

Her spokesman said some of the money is not needed now and will be required for inquests to take place at a later date.

“But as the PM said, they will get all the money that they need,” he said.
