Fundraiser For Homeless Man Who Helped Young Woman Stranded At London's Euston Station Smashes Target

He never expected anything in return for helping a young woman.

A crowd-funder set up by a young woman after she was helped by a homeless man while stranded in late-night London smashed its target on Tuesday.

Nicole Sedgebeer, 21, originally hoped to raise £1,000 to help Mark who she said "embodies the best of humanity".

The target was raised to £8,000 but still generous people continued to give, with the total at the time of writing at £11,625.

Best birthday gift ever seeing how much people have donated for Mark. Thank you to everyone who's helped us hit our target. Let's keep going! 󾔖

Sedgebeer had missed her train from Euston Station to Milton Keynes on 3 March when Mark came to her rescue just as she was "about to burst into tears".

He led her to an all-night cafe where she could stay in the warm and even came back at 5am to make sure she got the train back.

In a post on Facebook, Sedgebeer explained:

“He said he would take me to a cafe that was open as it was too dangerous to walk by myself.

“He left me after a coffee and a chat and explained that he had to go get his sleeping bag but he would be back at 5 to walk me back to the station. (Me being a typical bitch didn't believe he would come back) It got past 5 and he was a no show.

I hope this story makes people look twice when they see a homeless person. Last night I missed my last train home and...

“As I got round the corner my homeless friend Mark was running down the street towards me. Not only did he turn up but he had to get a bus to come get me.

“This man who I probably would have avoided eye contact with if he asked for spare change, completely changed such a negative event into the most eye-opening event in my life.”

In an update on the JustGiving page she set up for Mark, Sedgebeer wrote: “Mark embodies the best of humanity.

“He went out of his way to help me, a complete stranger, when the reality of his situation is that people walk past him every day without offering him help.

“Mark you are one special man, I will never look down on a homeless person again and so want to do something to help Mark and all the other homeless people around Euston.”
