The nominations for this year’s Golden Globes have been announced, with a wave of British talent being recognised for their performances in film and television in the last year.

However, while stars including Emma Corrin, Daniel Kaluuya, Olivia Colman, Sir Anthony Hopkins and, yes, even James Corden received nods, there was one notable omission from the list of nominees.

We are, of course, talking about I May Destroy You.

Despite its huge critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic when it aired last year, the BBC-HBO drama was totally snubbed from the Golden Globes nominations in 2021.

The show itself was absent from the Best Miniseries category, while none of its main cast members – Michaela Coel, who also created and wrote the show, Weruche Opia and Paapa Essiedu – were nominated for their performances either.

Immediately after the Globes nominations were announced, fans began questioning the show’s absence from all of the categories it was eligible for:

Following its debut in June last year, I May Destroy You was lauded by both viewers and critics, in particular for its depiction of sexual assault and the fact it featured a predominantly Black-British cast.

It was named the best TV show of 2020 by multiple outlets at the end of last year, including The Guardian, Time, The Independent and Empire.

This year’s Golden Globes nominations were announced during a virtual ceremony hosted by Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P Henson on Wednesday afternoon.

The winners will be announced on 28 February, after being moved back a month due to the pandemic.
