Ice Warning Remains As Temperatures Plunge Again

Christmas partygoers can expect another night of freezing temperatures, with an ice warning in place for much of Britain.

Lows of minus 7C (19.4F) are expected and people are being warned to wrap up warm and take care on potentially slippy pavements and roads.

A yellow warning for ice remains in place through to 10.30am on Sunday for North Wales, the Midlands, northern England and eastern Scotland.

The Met Office has urged motorists to take care on untreated roads and warned pedestrians to be aware of the potential for falls on icy surfaces.

Another freezing night is forecast following a low of minus 7.8C (17.96F) in Dalwhinnie in the Highlands overnight on Friday into Saturday.

The mercury is expected to plunge to minus 7C (19.4F) in eastern Scotland and northern England.

Forecaster Mark Wilson said: “It is going to be a very cold night, particularly across eastern areas.

“There will be some pretty dense freezing fog patches around as well, so if you are out for whatever reason it’s best to wrap up and just be aware quite how cold it’s going to be.”

By Tuesday, winds from the Atlantic are expected to bring daytime highs of 12C (53.6F), reducing the chances of a white Christmas, Mr Wilson added.

“Generally I think it will be milder than it has been in the run-up to Christmas,” he said.

“It’s still too early to say but as things stand at the moment it’s looking less likely than a week or so ago when it was very cold.

“The signs are it’s unlikely to be a widespread white Christmas, but it’s something we are continuing to monitor.”
