A 500kg Second World War bomb found in the River Thames near London City Airport, causing dozens of flights to be cancelled, has been detonated under water.

Navy divers used a flotation device to take it down the river to the Thames Estuary where it was blown up off Shoeburyness, Essex.

The Royal Navy’s first attempt to conduct a controlled explosion had been cancelled as strong winds and a large sea swell posed a risk to divers.
