Layla Moran has said she will run for the Lib Dem leadership, as she described its revoke Article 50 Brexit policy as a “big mistake”.

The party’s education spokesmen announced her bid to succeed Jo Swinson on Sunday morning.

Moran, the Lib Dem education spokesperson, said the party needed to earn the “trust” of voters again.

She told Sky’s Sophy Ridge on Sunday: “Yes, I will be standing for the leadership of the Liberal Democrats.

“I believe it’s time that we move on as a party and offer a positive vision for the country, and I’m the right person to lead that change.”

The Oxford West and Abingdon MP said it is “really important that we listen and understand where we’ve been going wrong”.

She added: “They (voters) come back and say in the election revoke was a big mistake because it felt very top down, and actually co-operation is a key part of what we believe as Liberal Democrats and we need to earn their trust again.”

Moran said she did not rule out supporting the UK rejoining the EU “one day”.

“If there is a way to move that door open so that one day, with public consent, we go back then I would be first in line,” she said.

The Lib Dems fought the 2019 election on a platform of stopping Brexit on day one if the party won a majority.

Swinson began the campaign pitching herself as a viable prime minister in waiting.

But in the end the party won just 11 seats. Swinson lost her own constituency, triggering a leadership contest.
