With two episodes of Line Of Duty left in the current series, bosses have announced a new key player who will play a pivotal role in the action that’s still to come.

On Tuesday, it was confirmed that Anna Maxwell Martin would be a new addition to the cast as of this week’s episode, playing Detective Chief Superintendent Patricia Carmichael, a senior anti-corruption officer.

So far, little is known of how she’ll be introduced, other than that she’s to play a “major” part in the rest of the series.

The British actress said of her upcoming role: “I’ve been a fan of Line Of Duty for years, so was dead chuffed to be part of series five. I’m so pleased I no longer have to keep it a secret!

“I feel honoured to follow in the footsteps of the host of great actors who make up the Line Of Duty family, and Jed Mercurio - of course - has written a brilliant character in Carmichael. She’s a woman on a mission.”

Anna is no stranger to a drama, and has previously won two TV Baftas for her work in Bleak House and Poppy Shakespeare.

She also earned two additional nominations for her leading role in South Riding, as well as the 2016 sitcom Motherland.

Line Of Duty returned for its fifth series at the end of last month, after a two-year absence.

While regulars like Vicky McClure and Adrian Dunbar returned for the new episodes, This Is England actor Stephen Graham also joined the action as newcomer John Corbett.

During Line Of Duty’s absence, the show’s creator Jed Mercurio enjoyed huge success with his hit series Bodyguard, which went on to be recognised at the Golden Globes in January, after making a splash on Netflix in the US, as well as at the upcoming TV Baftas.

Line Of Duty returns for a brand new instalment on BBC One this Sunday night at 9pm, after last week’s episode left us with some burning questions we need answers to.
