A burlesque performer has claimed airline staff stopped her from boarding a flight because they considered her outfit to be "inappropriate".

Maggie McMuffin was wearing stripy shorts when she attempted to join a JetBlue flight from Boston to Seattle last week.

But on Facebook her friend, Molly McIsaac, claimed "the pilot said her clothes would prevent her boarding the plane".

"The flight lead asked if she had anything else to wear and told her if she didn't they could rebook the flight for her," McIsaac added.

"Maggie ended up having to go to another terminal to buy a pair of women's sleep shorts in XL for 'proper coverage.'"

McIsaac went on to say that JetBlue has refunded her friend for the new shorts and given her $200 (£136) in credit.

But she says the pilot has not apologised and the company has not offered an explanation for its behaviour.

"Sexism is alive and well in this world," she said.

"How does what Maggie was wearing affect her ability to fly? It doesn't."

According to The Metro, a spokesperson for JetBlue said: "The gate and onboard crew discussed the customer’s clothing and determined that the burlesque shorts may offend other families on the flight.

"While the customer was not denied boarding, the crew members politely asked if she could change. The customer agreed and continued on the flight without interruption.

"We support our crew members’ discretion to make these difficult decisions, and we decided to reimburse the customer for the cost of the new shorts and offered a credit for future flight as a good will gesture."

The Huffington Post UK has reached out to JetBlue for additional comment, but has yet to hear back at the time of publication.
