Major Incident Declared At Leisure Centre Amid Fears Of Chemical Leak

A major incident has been declared at Aura Leisure Centre in Letterkenny, Donegal, Ireland, sparking fears of a chemical leak.

Five people have been rushed to hospital after a large number of swimmers suffered an adverse reaction to the water at the leisure centre’s swimming pool. Three are believed to be children.

Letterkenny University Hospital has put a major emergency plan in place after being contacted by the leisure centre staff who evacuated the pool.

Emergency services attended the scene and it is thought that as many as 50 people may have suffered a reaction to the water.

Doctors and nurses from Letterkenny University Hospital also came to the scene to help emergency services examine people.

Journalists in the area including Greg Hughes from Highland Radio journalist Greg revealed the news on Twitter. Hughes posted: “There’s a major incident at the Aura Leisure centre in #letterkenny.

“A large number of people appear to have had a reaction to the water. Letterkenny hospital has put its emergency plan in place.”

Niamh Holohan, group event and communications manager at the Aura Holohan Group contacted HuffPost UK and said: “A minor incident occurred at Letterkenny Pool this morning.

“In line with our safety policy our emergency procedures were put in place immediately, and purely as a precautionary measure the ambulance services were alerted.

“We are grateful for their prompt response. We have no further comment to make at this time.”
