Detectives have launched a murder investigation after a man was stabbed to death in a street following a row with a gang of youths.
Essex Police were called to Caister Drive, a residential street in Basildon, at about 9.30pm on Tuesday to reports a man in his forties had been found with serious injuries.
He was taken by air ambulance to Basildon Hospital but died from his injuries.
A force spokesman said: "The victim, who lived in Basildon, is thought to have been stabbed during an altercation with a group of around five youths or young men."
Several locations around Caister Drive were cordoned off while forensic investigations were carried out.
Detective Chief Inspector Simon Werrett said: "I would appeal for anyone who saw the attack to contact my team.
"This happened in a residential area so people would have been about."
