Eight new 60-minute episodes of the show have been commissioned, and are set to air in 2017.

The news was announced at the Edinburgh International Television Festival, where screenwriter and novelist, Hans Rosenfeldt, the CEO of production company Buccaneer Media, Tony Wood and leading actress Anna appeared on a panel with industry executives.

Teasing the second series, writer Hans said: “I was delighted at the reaction to the first season and am thrilled to be revisiting ‘Marcella’ for ITV.

“In the second season, the audience will get the opportunity to spend more time in her world, further exploring some of the characters and getting to know them better.”

The first season of ‘Marcella’ reached a gripping conclusion back in May, when the identity of the serial killer was finally revealed.

However, there were still plenty of loose ends that were not tied up, which have nicely set the show up for another series.
