My Eurovision Experience

The Eurovision for me holds really great memories. Ever since Bucks Fizz won in 1981, I have watched it and it was about that time that I knew I wanted to be a singer. I was 10 years old then - and how was I to know that 12 years later, I was to represent my country, and I have to say representing your country in anything is a great honour.

To be asked by the BBC to be the 1993 entrant and to have a say in the whole process sealed it for me.

I was offered my own Saturday night show hosted by the great Sir Terry Wogan and with the backing of my record company headed by Simon Cowell pre X Factor, I had an Idea that we could do quite well - but it was still a big gamble.

I had already had success with Pete Waterman but felt this would open up my career to new things. So off I went on my Eurovision journey.

There are not many people who have experienced being part of Eurovision - and I can tell you it is like a big family. You get to perform to a massive audience, which is what every performer is striving for, and as long as you have a good catchy song and be confident in yourself what can go wrong?

Being in Ireland for the week before the contest was really something, lots of rehearsals, many interviews and of course the parties - what's not to like?

Coming second to Ireland at the time, I was devastated. I went back to my hotel room and ordered soup and rolls. But looking back, to come second and lose by one vote is bloody good.

The show opened up my career to the West End and touring shows. I am always busy with shows and concerts and of course when Eurovision comes around every May, I get to travel and perform for Eurovision parties and events - I am still part of the Eurovision family.

And you know what? The little girl from Liverpool watching back in 1981 seeing Bucks Fizz win now gets to sometimes sing on shows with them as her own daughter Gracie who's five watches on...

Sonia came second in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1993 with Better the Devil You Know. Watch her performance below:
