On Monday, GMB launched a poll asking if the divisive presenter – who currently claims to identify as a “two-spirit penguin” – should be fired over his views on gender.

As of Wednesday, almost half a million votes had been cast, but unfortunately for Piers, 60% of viewers voted for him to be sacked from his presenting role, despite him launching a last ditch attempt to swing the poll the other way.

The presenter accused “snowflake websites and Twitter handles” of “hijacking” the poll.

But this being Piers, he was still victorious in defeat, boasting on Wednesday’s GMB that the result would actually lead to him getting a pay rise.

“Here’s the thing, I think they genuinely think they’re going to get rid of me and that’s what makes this all the funnier. You’re not going to get rid of me, it’s not how it works.

“They think that by making me trend worldwide for two days and making me the most talked about breakfast presenter in the world that is the way to get rid of me.

“Let me tell you what you’ve done. You have helped me get a pay rise. So cheers! Cheers everybody.”

Ther Good Morning Britain poll was created in reaction to a Change.org campaign to have Piers fired from GMB, calling out what was claimed to be his “dehumanising dismissal of transgender/non-binary/gender-fluid individuals”.

But its creation sparked a rival petition to keep him on GMB “for his common sense approach to life”, which quickly overtook the original campaign - much to the delight of Piers.

One person Piers can count on for support is his ITV colleague, Lorraine Kelly.

Asked whether he should lose his job over his comments, she told PA: “Of course not. Of course not. It’s ridiculous. But don’t you imagine he is not revelling in all the attention – because he is.

“Actually, he is making a very good point. Whether you agree with someone or not, you can’t have a situation where we are going to shut people down.”

She added: “He’s doing it with his tongue firmly in his cheek, of course.”

Piers has courted controversy on a number of occasions on GMB with his comments on gender fluidity.

Last month, he said he identified as a “two-spirit penguin” following the news that a baby penguin at London Aquarium would be raised gender neutral by a lesbian penguin couple.

The aquarium said this was “completely natural”.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
