A Private Eye story is going viral for “nailing” a common misconception about Brexit according to fans on Twitter.

The short piece in the current issue of the magazine is titled ‘No Major Effect’ From Brexit So Far, and addresses why the vote to leave the European Union has had “little effect” on the economy.

The sarcastic article, which has been shared thousands of times online, says the Office Of National Statistics has confirmed why Brexit hasn’t yet made too much of a dent on Britain’s finances.

It notes sardonically that “Amazingly, the economy is continuing as if we were still at present a member of the European Union and able to trade tariff-free across the 27 member states”.

It then points out with devastating bluntness that, “This is because until Theresa May invokes Article 50, we are still at present a member of the European Union and able to trade tariff-free across the 27 member states”.

Or, in more technical terms, Brexit hasn’t happened yet and “the shit hasn’t hit the fan”.

Commenters shared the article with delight, claiming it was “spot on”, while those opposed to Brexit said it should be “stapled on the head of every numpty who said Brexit didn’t cause the UK economic harm”.
