Robert McBride, the head of the police watchdog the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), is being investigated for allegedly assaulting a young woman, Eyewitness News (EWN) reported on Saturday morning.

EWN reported that an assault case was opened against McBride on Sunday in Gauteng, after he allegedly hit and tried to strangle a young woman in a car.

He told EWN that he would not be commenting on the allegations.

News24 could not independently confirm the details of the case.

When asked for comment on Saturday morning, police spokesperson Brigadier Mathapelo Peters said Saps is investigating a case of common assault from the Sunday in question.

"We will however not confirm the identity of the neither the suspect nor the victim until the case has been brought before Court," she said.

IPID spokesperson Moses Dlamini did not immediately reply to a request for comment. -- News24
