Roger Federer, we feel your pain.
As the worldās top athletes soaked up the electrifying atmosphere at the Olympic Opening Ceremony in Rio on Friday night, the injured Swiss tennis star was elsewhere watching the event on television.
Having been forced to pull out of the Games just two weeks ago with a knee injury, he sent a heartbreaking tweet to those who would have been his teammates:
āWish I was there with you,ā the 34-year-old posted alongside a screengrab of the Swiss team walking the Parade of Nations inside the Maracana Stadium.
What makes it all the more wistful is that Rio 2016 was likely to be the 17-time Grand Slam championās last shot at a gold medal in singles tennis ā one of the only accolades that eludes him.
He topped the podium in the doubles event at Beijing 2008, but lost the singles final to Britainās Andy Murray at London 2012.
