Sam Smith And Dustin Lance Black Finally Bury The Hatchet After 2016 Oscars Gaffe

The Oscar-winning director took the opportunity to apologise to Sam for "getting carried away".

Sam Smith and Dustin Lance Black have well and truly patched things up, following their public dispute after the Oscars in 2016.

As you may recall, when Sam scooped the Academy Award for Best Original Song that year, they suggested “no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar” before them, which was far from the case.

One of those Oscar-winning gay men, Dustin Lance Black, was less than impressed with Sam’s gaffe, instructing them at the time to “stop texting” his then-fiancé, Tom Daley.

Sam later apologised for the blunder, with Dustin tweeting shortly afterwards that “knowing our LGBTQ history is important”.

“We stand on the shoulders of countless brave men and women who paved the way for us,” he added.

At Wednesday night’s Attitude awards, Dustin made a speech in which he publicly apologised to Sam for getting “carried away”.

“Sam, I am so sorry,” the filmmaker said. “Sometimes I get carried away, and you are a motherfucking blessing of a human being, so thank you.”

While collecting their award for Person Of The Year, Sam responded: “Dustin, I just wanted to say you didn’t have to say sorry. But thank you so much.

“The truth is I did fuck up my speech royally at the Oscars in front of 90 million people… so I’ve written my speech down tonight.”

The pair were also photographed together during the event.

Sam received Person Of The Year during the bash for their recent musical output – which included a change in sound, and new collaborations with Normani and Calvin Harris – as well as having raised awareness of issues surrounding gender identity.
