The January transfer window can make a club's season if they get it right, or break it if they get it wrong. The rumours are flying around and there are always players linked with your club that make you feel uneasy.
But if you're expecting to see Emmanuel Adebayor listed, prepare to be disappointed. Believe it or not, the controversial Togolese striker would be quite a good January acquisition. By all accounts he's been working hard on his fitness and keeping a low profile back home, and you can't argue with his goal record or proven ability to make an instant impact wherever he goes.
Adebayor's one to keep an eye on, but these six are definitely ones to avoid this month...
Jonjo Shelvey
Well, Newcastle haven't exactly avoided Jonjo Shelvey, instead choosing to splash out the sizeable sum of £12m on the Swansea midfielder. It certainly represents a good deal for the Welsh club, pocketing a handsome £7m profit just two years after signing a player who had become very much out of favour.
But Newcastle really aren't getting a good deal. On his day Shelvey can be as good as any midfielder in the Premier League, but one would have to question why he so suddenly fell out of favour at the Liberty Stadium after an excellent season in 2014/15. There have been questions about his attitude before, while Newcastle have had a real issue with so called 'bad eggs' over the past few years.
Darron Gibson
Everton midfielder Darron Gibson could well be on the move before the month is out. As a senior international, schooled at Manchester United, with several years worth of Premier League football, he sounds a shrewd acquisition. But scratch below the surface and any club linked with the Irishman should run the other way.
More than anything, Gibson appears terribly injury prone. That means it could be a matter of just days or weeks before he's unavailable for a new team. As such, it would be tough to justify any top flight side taking a punt on the 28-year-old. Everton may also offload Aiden McGeady given half a chance, another one to avoid.
Andrea Ranocchia
The Inter Milan defender was the subject of a recent bid from Norwich and has also been linked with a move to Liverpool as the Reds desperately try and patch up an injury ravaged defence. Italian defenders have not fared all that well in the Premier League and the 27-year-old would be expected to hit the ground running with whichever team he may join.
A quick search for videos of Ranocchia in action and it's clear he lacks the physical qualities to be a success in English football. He looks lightweight, sluggish and is just better off avoided.
Andros Townsend
If any Premier League club has £14m to blow and is looking for a one dimensional winger who cuts in from the right, shoots with his left foot from an unreasonable distance and/or angle, and misses the target, then forgotten Tottenham wide-man Andros Townsend is perfect.
After years of lower division loans, Townsend finally got his chance at White Hart Lane in 2013. But despite putting in a few performances for England and being hailed as a national saviour, it quickly became apparent that he was a flash in the pan as defenders worked him out. He's simply not Premier League quality and doesn't offer value for money.
Felipe Anderson
The problem with Lazio's Felipe Anderson is that his reputation is far, far bigger than it should be for a player with a CV like his. Manchester United are believed to have been flirting with the Brazilian play-maker/winger since the summer and if a deal is to be completed it will cost the Old Trafford club in excess of £37m for a player who appears to be massively over-hyped.
The situation isn't that dissimilar to the one which saw United in the running for Lucas Moura in 2012. On that occasion the club refused to meet the heavily inflated asking price, but three years later they haven't missed out on much. Lucas has been underwhelming at PSG and going big for an unproven Anderson offers an equally big risk.
Saido Berahino
Saido Berahino never got his move to Tottenham in the summer after West Brom played hard ball on the final day of the transfer window. But if Spurs, or indeed any 'big' club, Liverpool for example, were to make a fresh approach in January it would be a mistake.
The 22-year-old has been unable to command a regular place in Tony Pulis' Baggies so far this season and stands little chance of keeping the likes of Harry Kane out of the team at White Hart Lane. At present Berahino would be nothing more than an expensive bench player should he go anywhere in January, unless it's a sideways move.
