Tesla Model 3 Unveiled As Elon Musk's Affordable Electric Car For The Masses

Over 130,000 pre-orders and the numbers keep climbing...

The electric age is here, according to Elon Musk.

Last night the billionaire inventor unveiled the Tesla Model 3 - an affordable electric car that he hopes will finally bring us kicking and screaming into an age without fossil fuels.

What makes the Model 3 so special? Well it has a US price of around $27,500 (£18,000) after incentives which means that mere mortals like you and us can actually afford one.

It also comfortably seats five adults with room for luggage in the boot.

Despite this size it can go from 0-60 in less than six seconds and has a range of 200+ miles. That might not sound great but considering London to Wales is roughly 130 miles that's actually pretty good.

If on the off-chance you do fancy driving to Scotland then Tesla is doubling the number of ultrafast 'Supercharger' charging stations around the globe to over 7,000.

These charging points are free, located at regular intervals on major motorways and have the ability to charge even Tesla's biggest car to 80 per cent in less than half an hour.

In case you're wondering, to fully charge that car from your average plug socket it would take over 20 hours.

So to put that into perspective you can now leave in the morning, stop for coffee and charge the car at the same time and be in the north of England without having used a drop of petrol.

Tesla says it'll start shipping the Model 3 in early 2017 and the company claims it has already had over 132,000 people place a pre-order with a $1,000 deposit.

That's potentially $4 billion in sales and that's before the car has even been released.
