The Inspirational Acid Attack Survivor Setting The Standard On Beauty Diversity

Katie Gee was volunteering in Zanzibar in 2013 when a man passing by on a scooter threw acid on her. Katie suffered 35% burns to her body. After opening up about her experience in an article several years later, she was described by an editor as 'horribly disfigured'. This inspired Katie to start #settingthestandard, a viral movement encouraging people to share the photos of themselves they wouldn't normally upload to Instagram to challenge beauty ideals.
