The Lash Backlash

Each year there's always one beauty trend that instils fear and anticipation in equal measures to women worldwide. This season? The rise of the 'no mascara' look as designers sent their models down the catwalk with naked lashes. Say what? No falsies? No mascara?

Each year there's always one beauty trend that instils fear and anticipation in equal measures to women worldwide. This season? The rise of the 'no mascara' look as designers sent their models down the catwalk with naked lashes. Say what? No falsies? No mascara?

That's right. Make-up artists left it firmly out of their kits at Tommy Hilfiger, Preen and Donna Karan and barely-there lashes stole the shows from New York to Paris. The 'natural look' has been stealthily creeping up on us for seasons now and from Christopher Kane's fresh-faced beauties to Missoni's pared down peepers, it's a fact - panda eyes are out. And while effortless certainly sounds appealing, most of us find the thought of stepping outside without a flick of the magic wand somewhat daunting.

Well, relax ladies.

For those of us who aren't naturally blessed with Bambi-like lashes, brown mascara is a good alternative. According to MAC's Director of Make-up Artistry Terry Barber, 'Brown is back - it's chic and very 90s. Conservative make-up is being reinvented as cool'. Apply MAC's Fibre Rich lash mascara at the roots for a feathery hint of colour, without adding volume. A good tip is to always curl your lashes first for a wide-eyed effect.

Another way to work the look is by focusing on a different element like strong eyebrows or a bright lip. Hot pink and tangerine will add the perfect pop of summer colour. The best colours this season are YSL's Volupté Sheer Candy in Goyave Sorbet, a delicious bubblegum pink and Topshop's orangey Charmed - perfect for a zingy pout.

Yes it will take some guts, but this summer mascara is officially a no-go zone. So take a deep breath, and blink.
