A travelling circus has reopened after a man was found dead in the Big Top in Cleethorpes.

Russells International Circus was forced to cancel its shows on Wednesday after performers arrived to rehearse and discovered the body of one of their colleagues.

The man was found by weightlifters entering the tent in the morning, Grimsby Live reported.

Rusty Russell, who owns the circus, told the newspaper: “Everyone in the circus is devastated, we are basically a touring village and everyone here is extremely close-knit. This member of staff was a personal friend of everyone here.

“A lot of people are taking the news really badly. His girlfriend in the circus is completely devastated.”

A spokesman for Humberside Police said: “We attended the Humberstone Road area of Grimsby yesterday morning following the report of a sudden death of a man at nearby premises.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.”

An East Midlands Ambulance spokesperson said: “We received a call at 7.23am to an incident at Cleethorpes.”

“A paramedic in a fast response vehicle attended. No one was taken to hospital and police are investigating.”

On Thursday a message on the circus’s official Facebook page said: “Thank you to all the people that have sent messages to us we really do appreciate it, it is a really tough time for all of us, but we are all in agreement that the show must go on, so we will continue our shows from today.”
