Theresa May will agree a timetable in two weeks’ time for her resignation as prime minister.
According to Sir Graham Brady, the chairman of the Tory backbench 1922 Committee, the PM will announce when she will step down following the second reading of the Withdrawal Agreement Bill (WAB).
The Bill, which legislates for the UK’s exit from the EU, is due to be introduced in the week beginning June 3.
“We have agreed that she and I will meet following the 2nd Reading of the Bill to agree a timetable for the election of a new leader of the Conservative and Unionist Party,” Brady said.
May is under intense pressure from some Tory MPs to step down sooner rather than later.
The PM met the executive of the 922 for around an hour and a half in her room in the Commons today.
Following the meeting, Brady said in a letter to tory MPs: “The prime minister is determined to secure our departure from the European Union.”
He said May was “devoting her efforts” to securing the passage of the WAB in order to see the UK leave the EU “by the summer”.
The announcement came shortly after Boris Johnson confirmed he would stand in the upcoming Tory leadership race.
