It was an emotional show for This Morning viewers during Friday’s episode as the on-screen presenting team came together to support Phillip Schofield after he came out as gay.

Friday’s show opened with Holly interviewing Phillip, as he told of his private struggle with his sexuality, before Ruth and Eamonn later walked on set to show their love for him.

The team then sat on the sofa altogether sharing encouraging words and hugs, as a round of applause broke out in the studio.

The presenting team has been besieged by rumours of an alleged feud between Phillip and Ruth in recent months, but many viewers commented how lovely it was to see the TV family uniting for Phil.

Phillip and Holly’s friendship and clear adoration for one another also had viewers in tears:

During the interview, Holly told Phillip: “Whatever happens in the future, I’ll be sat by your side forever... we’re all part of this family.”

Eamonn also said: “So many people will be strengthened by what you’ve said, we’re by your side, we’ll be the first to stand beside you.”

Phillip came out as gay in a post on his Instagram Story on Friday morning, writing: “You never know what’s going on in someone’s seemingly perfect life, what issues they are struggling with, or the state of their wellbeing – and so you won’t know what has been consuming me for the last few years.

“With the strength and support of my wife and daughters, I have been coming to terms with the fact I am gay.”

Describing his wife as “incredible” and the “kindest soul he has ever met”, Phillip also praised his “astonishing” daughters, adding: “Both mine and Steph’s entire families have stunned me with their love, instant acceptance and support. Of course, they are worried about Steph, but I know they will scoop us both up.

“My friends are the best, especially Holly [Willoughby, his This Morning co-host], who has been so kind and wise – and who has hugged me as I sobbed on her shoulder.”

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
