The Coastguard was alert and the trio were picked up by the Border Force cutter HMC Seeker near Hastings in East Sussex on Saturday morning, Sky News reported.

According to the BBC, their white, three-metre-long dinghy had started to leak.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) said in a statement: "The boat has now now been located and the incident has been handed over to UK Border Force."

A Border Force spokesman said: "Border Force was contacted at 9.30am this morning, Saturday 11 June, by the Coastguard informing us that three individuals in a small boat required assistance.

"HMC Seeker was deployed immediately and has picked up the individuals onboard who are believed to be Iranian nationals.

"The group will now be processed."
