Marmite XO Is Back – So How Does It Compare To The Usual Spread?

It’s been matured 28 days – four times longer than the regular stuff.

There aren’t many things in life I ‘stan’ – maybe it’s getting older and not feeling I can use Gen Z terminology, or perhaps it’s opinion fatigue. But if I’m going to die on a hill, let it be one fortified with vitamin B12 and folic acid, spreading its yeasty goodness across some hot, buttered toast. TL;DR: I stan Marmite.

When I heard the Marmite XO (Extra Old) was back in the shops, I knew I had to get my hands on it, pronto. The product first launched as a limited edition nearly 10 years ago, but is back permanently after some devoted fans on social media clamoured for its return.

As you can imagine, it was a great day when the goods arrived at HuffPost HQ, ready to be sampled.

So how does this spread differ from earlier incarnations? Well, it’s been matured for longer – 28 days, which is four times longer than the regular stuff – and promises a stronger taste. Its bright yellow lid and lettering have been replaced with gold for a more sophisticated look.

The first thing to say is that a little goes a long away. If, like me, you’re someone who spreads your Marmite on thick, with tar-like glory – you only need half of the amount to get your fill. Buying this version, therefore, makes economical sense because your jar will last longer.

“It’s tastier – the difference between a mild cheddar and a mature cheddar.”

If you prefer a light dusting of your beloved yeasty treat, this could be a little too strong for your palette. So do spread with caution.

One reviewer said it’s not just a stronger version of Marmite, “it’s tastier” too – “the difference between a mild cheddar and a mature cheddar; or a £6 bottle of red and a £12 bottle.”

Want to have a try? The 250g jars are available exclusively in select Tesco stores costing £3.99, with regular Marmite jars costing £2.70.

This is the second new Marmite product this year, following on from the Marmite Peanut Butter hybrid, which, yes, we also taste-tested – on camera, no less –because truly we are here for you.
