Wedding Ring Reunited With Groom 37 Years After He Lost It

'For me it is very important to give it back'

A groom has been reunited with his wedding ring – a whopping 37 years after he lost it while diving in the Mediterranean Sea.

Scuba diver Jessy Nisos found the golden ring crusted in sediment and posted an appeal on Facebook.

The picture of the ring, which has the date of the wedding – 17-02-79 – engraved on the inside was shared more than 80,000 times as Nisos appealed: “I wish I could give it back to the owner. It has been lost for a long, long, time… you can share this please? For me it is very important to give it back.”

The ring’s owner, Augustin Aliaga, was alerted to the viral post by his niece.

He told the Heraldo newspaper he was able to prove he was the owner by sending Nisos a copy of his and wife Juan Sanchez’s marriage certificate and a photograph of the wedding ring.

He added: “It was a pleasant surprise because more than the material, the important thing is the symbolic and emotional meaning, as it is the ring that we were married in a church with.”

The ring went missing five months after the pair tied the knot in Benidorm but previous efforts to trace it had failed and the couple never believed they would see it again.
