The Way We Were and The New Entrepreneur

Professionals in the late 30s, 40s and 50s are realising that with increasing retirement ages they will probably need to carry on working for another 20+ years. If that is the case they want to do something that is much more fulfilling and rewarding.

Here is a great little entrepreneur video trailer that was created by Crank Tank Studio. It's part of their efforts to obtain crowd funding to produce a feature length documentary. The trailer highlights how people are no longer accepting one of the main social norms that has been in place for the last 50 to 60 years. Namely, that there is a prescribed formula to be successful, and consequently to be happy. This formula consisted of :-

  • Get a Degree.
  • Get the best job that you can.
  • Work your way up to the 6 figure salary.
  • Get the best material possessions, ie the house, the car, TV, etc...
  • Work for 40 to 50 years and then retire.

As we see day in day out with our clients, this formula comes at a price, and for many this is too high. It is as if their hopes, dreams and ambitions have been permanently left on hold, but not any longer.

As one person in the video says they where climbing the ladder and they got to the top, only to realise that the ladder has been leaning against the wrong wall!

Looking For A New Alternative

However, increasing number of professionals are starting to reject this scenario. What we are seeing is a situation where these professionals went to university in their late teens and early twenties. They studied for a degree in a subject that they had no particularly interest in, they just wanted a recognised degree. They went on into a corporate career and worked their way up. Now, some 15 to 20+ years later they feel disillusioned, frustrated, and unhappy about the fact that this corporate career and the associated lifestyle is not making them happy at all. Their work, in a lot of cases, is not aligned with their values and beliefs, and they have come to realise that this show can't go on, not at the expense of their health, failed relationships and unfulfilled professional life. An increased social cynicism about the role of corporations in society is also on the rise.

These professionals are now looking to an alternative and they are looking for a way to escape the corporate rat race. But there is a great deal of confusion and fear that stops these professionals achieving their corporate escape. It is for these very people that we have published the book Corporate Escape The Rise of The New Entrepreneur

The Future of Work, The New Entrepreneur

The book highlights the social "norms" that have lead to the current scenario, and the increasing disillusionment with large corporations. The book goes on to lay out what is increasingly becoming an alternative to the prescribed formula.

Professionals are looking to become self employed, running their own small business in collaboration with other professionals. These are the 'New Entrepreneurs', and this Entrepreneurial model is becoming the future of work.

The video is in itself an example of the way professionals are working. Here 5 entrepreneur filmmakers have teamed up to produce a feature length film, and they have financed the project by means of crowd funding.
