Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and three other Democrats - Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib and Ayanna Pressley have condemned the US president's tweets.
Outlets were quick to cover the president's rant against congresswomen, but mainly skirted around the central issue.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez doubled down on her comparisons of the situation at the border to World War II.
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticised the US Customs and Border Protection agency after visiting detention centres along the US-Mexico border. Lawmakers Judy Chu, Rashida Tlaib and Joaquin Castro also visited centres and echoed Ocasio-Cortez’s criticism of the way Central American immigrants are being treated while in detention.
"Being someone’s daughter actually isn’t a career qualification."
The congresswoman rebuked "shrieking Republicans" who pushed back against the remark.
The president trades barbs with the lawmaker on Twitter.
"I‘ve had mornings where I wake up & the 1st thing I do w/ my coffee is review photos of the men (it’s always men) who want to kill me."
