With a Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs who is dubious about the very existence of man-made climate change and who has cut spending in the area by over a quarter in the last year, what hope do we really have of defending ourselves against the changing weather, let alone attempting to bring it to a halt?
In science communication we tell the truth as we understand it, based on what we currently know from a rigorous and objective evidence base. As a result, few people welcome our messages, and this is why climate change is one of the most scrutinized areas of public policy science.

Of course we should do all we can to aid the Chinese and other growing economies to improve their lives as sustainably as possible. But none of that removes from us the responsibility of a radical rethink of our relationship with our planet. And that must begin at home, not on the other side of the world.
