Several people are feared dead after a fire broke out at an animation studio in the Japanese city of Kyoto. Police are investigating a possible arson attack, authorities and local media reported. A man burst into the Kyoto Animation building and started the fire, leaving dozens injured, some critically, Japanese authorities confirmed. The suspect was also injured and taken to a hospital.
Japan has restarted commercial whaling for the first time in 31 years. It is the first commercial hunt since 1988, after commercial whaling was banned by the International Whaling Commission. It still killed several hundred whales each year through a loophole allowing “scientific” whaling expeditions in the Antarctic Ocean. The catch quota for the end of this year is set at 227 whales.

A man wielding a knife has attacked a group of schoolchildren at a bus stop in south Tokyo. Sixteen people were injured and two died, including a 12-year-old girl and a 39-year-old man. The attacker later died in hospital from self-inflicted wounds.
