“It’s not about winning and losing ... It’s about living life together.”
Our journey into fostering started after two successful adoptions and the understanding of how important fostering a looked after child is. Our children were extremely lucky to have had amazing foster families, who provided a loving and stable environment and also prepared them for their forever families.
Things have come a long way. Public attitudes towards LGBTQ people have improved over the last few years and we're slowly seeing better representation of our country's diversity, both in the media and in politics.
'We don't always know how to describe everyone in our family,' says Jessica, whose friend Simon donated sperm to her and her female partner and welcomed them into his extended family. 'For instance, what do you call the mother of the wife of the man who helped you get pregnant?'
People are often shocked when I say I've suffered parental school gate bullying as a gay dad. And every so often I get challenged on why I feel there is a need to promote LGBT and LGBT family inclusion.

The term queer is generally acknowledged as more of a middle class phenomenon. As rebellious as it may be, it tends to belong to those who have had the good fortune of higher education, or those who have been lucky enough to be born into an 'arty' familial circle.
Three million pounds can never replace the countless nameless souls we have lost, both in the UK and around the world since formal education began, whose lives were terminally compromised by prejudice, discrimination and hate. It is to these people that I wish to dedicate my recent awards and honours, in addition to everyone who has invited me along to speak or supported my work.
There is something wrong with being gay. There is also something wrong with having two parents of the same sex. Kids, whatever their family background, can't help but at least wonder if this is the case as long as gays and same sex parents are completely absent from almost all of their TV programmes, films and books.
