Six months ago I decided to stop shopping in supermarkets as an experiment. I haven't bought anything in a Tesco, Sainsburys, Asda, Aldi, etc. since December 31st 2013.
The aid and development sectors work hard to promote and maintain an air of importance and legitimacy, but there are some hard truths that we need to face if the industry is to grow and address the huge challenges we, as a global community, continue to come up against - climate change and the increased frequency of natural disasters, unhindered economic growth causing environmental and social deterioration and the rise of political fundamentalism, just to name a few.
Cornwall Council will make a decision this week which will have a profound effect on the future of Cornwall. If they approve planning permission for the massive out-of-town retail development on 70 acres of green fields at Coyte Farm near St Austell, it will become Cornwall's 3rd largest retail centre.

With the horsemeat scandal still unfolding, the central issue is do we know what we're eating? The media narrative is one of distaste, disgust at eating hidden matter, complex food chains, uninformed moments of blame, as well as possible criminal actions.
After the initial shock value of eating a horse, we've gotten over it. Horsemeat isn't the issue. In fact, it's as normal as eating beef or chicken in many parts of the world. The real issue is this: if horsemeat can be slipped into our readymeals - what else could be in there?
