London Marathon 2016
I should probably start with a note of caution. If you're a first-time marathon runner who has yet to make it to the start line, please stop now and come back when you have a finishers' medal around your neck. Because, what I am about to say, you really don't need to know. Really!
There's less than one month to go until the London Marathon, and competitors will be ramping up their training. The problem with increasing volume is that you also increase the chances of injury. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to make sure you're fighting fit when marathon day arrives...
Over the last few weeks, with the London Marathon now within arm's reach, I have really felt the fear. And by fear, I mean fear of everything from fuelling to falling ill (pretty much on repeat). The highlights, you ask?
I started running because I wanted to show cancer that it could take a lot of things - my hair, my right boob, my tummy fat (to create the new boob) and my dignity - but it would never take my smile.
It was the point at which I was telling a colleague that the prospect of a two-run weekend (with a 10k race instead of a Sunday lie in) was deeply exciting that I realised just how much my life has changed - and how one-note my chat has become!
Already tempted to tuck away your trainers in time for 2017's resolution attempts? Then spare a thought for the thousands of people braving those dark January mornings - and even darker nights - as they prepare themselves for what is, for many, the ultimate running challenge: the London Marathon. I never thought I'd be one of them.
