Last week my partner gave birth to our daughter in our living room - the culmination of a pregnancy that was extraordinary only because we received the highest quality of personalised care - all from the NHS.
So we looked at appropriate technology and found, encouragingly, that virtually all CHWs either owned or had access to a mobile phone. But we also found that only 9% of them had ever sent a text message. So while they have phones, they use them for making and receiving phone calls - nothing else.
What does it mean at the village level when researchers, business, UN agencies, civil society and other sectors collaborate to reduce micronutrient deficiency? It means fewer children falling sick. Fewer adults too fatigued to work. Fewer mothers dying in childbirth.
There is a widespread belief among experts that nutrition and diet influences cognitive function in a number of ways; nutrients such as certain types of fats and vitamins have a positive effect as do eating habits such as starting the day with a healthy breakfast, whilst excessive amounts of sugar can cause problems.
