I often explain mindfulness as a practice that 'creates space' - mental space for myself, to help me make sure that I use the (often small mental) pause wisely between what the world brings to me and how I respond.
We know from leadership research that successful leaders stand out and achieve extraordinary results because they have higher self-awareness, better able to manage their thoughts and feelings in the midst of difficulty.
I teach mindfulness from time to time to groups of senior executives at one of the UK's leading financial services organisations. These are ambitious people with big jobs. They have only a few steps left on their career paths and the organisation wants to help them make those. That's where programmes like my Art of Mindful Leadership training come in.
This is one of the main points of mindfulness - that it isn't just about regulating your own thoughts and feelings but to use that clarity to communicate to the next person; it has a ripple effect. I call it neural wi-fi.
