To all those slightly irritating MPs who screech with rage if anyone mentions the low take-up, I say "relax", we'll get there in the end. And if you hadn't over-egged the likely take-up rates, then the legislation might never have made it over the starting line, so screech away.
Childcare in the UK is a shambles. Today's call from the charity Working Families and the Childcare Voucher Association to keep open childcare vouchers - even as the new tax-free childcare scheme comes into effect - doesn't help. Unusually though there is a simple fix that a brave government not obsessed with Brexit, could grab with both hands...
So SPL has failed? Absolutely not. It was always going to take time. Getting the legislation through was a massive achievement. And even a few fathers successfully taking it up is a success. What happens next is the important bit.
All in all we're all talking about a subject that needs more awareness and more ambassadors. Having role models at senior levels will help and hopefully over time the stigma will fade.
