There's a thriving Nepalese community in York as a result of Gurkhas serving in the British military. Just over 200 years ago during the Anglo-Nepalese War, British officers were so impressed by the skill and bravery of the Nepalese Gurkha soldiers that they recruited them into the East India Company. Gurkhas have served with the British army ever since.
The Nepalese community in England united last week in protest of the unofficial, yet ongoing, blockade between Nepal and India. The demonstration coincided with a visit from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the UK.
Agencies need to focus on the ongoing recovery work as well as delivering assistance in the testing conditions ahead of winter. There are huge challenges not only for the people of Nepal - who are making every effort to bounce back - but also for the humanitarian organisations who are striving to deliver against strict timelines and enormous physical and climatic difficulties.
