This relatively remote part of Switzerland is now connected round the year with most of the other regions through the world's longest meter gauge railway tunnel - the nearly 20km long Vereina rail tunnel.
Interlaken, in the 19th century, with its twin attractions of mountain air and spa waters, attracted some of the first tourists to Switzerland, and miraculous mountain railways were constructed to carry them to the heavens. They're still going strong today.
Situated on the edge of Lake Constance, Vorarlberg is the most Western state in Austria and offers a fine mix of culture and nature - hike in the morning, listen to Schubert in the afternoon and relax with opera on Lake Constance, in the evening.
