Thrive

The need to build social scaffolding is increasingly urgent, and with so many feeling lost in modern society, the challenge goes beyond healthcare. That's why we need a cross government response working across education, health, the Department for Work and Pensions and Department of Justice. The challenge we face is complex but by no means insurmountable. Recognising the complexity of planning the path towards a mentally thriving society is the first step towards paving it.
All too often life can feel like a competition to see who is the busiest. Our lives are filled with rushing, stress, anxiety and exhaustion. It's all about just getting through each day, ignoring tiredness and powering through. We're less in tune with our bodies and minds and there's little time left over to simply 'be'.
I hadn't taken my shoes off and walked barefoot since last summer. But, a couple of weeks ago the sun was shining, the first signs of spring had emerged and I decided to indulge in being barefoot, my favourite method for bringing mind and body present, so that it is possible to hear the deeper stirrings of the soul.

In my case, sleep deprivation is a feature of life, as I try to help my son get a good night's sleep. I know that when I get in to bed I will probably be up in an hour's time, and sometimes not get back to my own bed at all before having to go to work.
What happened with these steps is that, progressively, I began to become stronger and stronger in my defences against such shaming attacks. With this I became far more compassionate for myself and therefore for others. I began to experience deep gratitude for my job and deep love for the whole experience, with people I worked with through to the audiences who would turn up to my shows. This doesn't mean to say may I add that I live in a state of complete peace and harmony...
