Tropical cyclone

Thailand's first tropical storm in three decades has killed at least one person after it arrived on the south coast on 4 January 2018. Accompanying winds churned up high waves and gusts in the Gulf of Thailand, as tropical storm Pabuk made landfall in the Pak Phanang district of Nakhon Si Thammarat province. Popular tourist islands such as Koh Samui and Koh Pha Ngan are expected to be affected.

Storm Pabuk is expected to whip the southern Thai coast with winds of up to 40mph and waves up to 16ft high.

Over a dozen people have died as heavy rains and flooding continue in North and South Carolina. Hurricane Florence has been downgraded to a tropical depression, but governors from both states have urged residents to remain vigilant.

A powerful typhoon is moving towards the Japanese coast on Tuesday, believed to be the strongest tropical cyclone to come ashore in 25 years. 280 000 residents have been evacuated.
