At barely nine months, Prince George is a trendsetter in the world of babies' fashion. When his parents Duke and Duchess Prince William and Kate Middleton ended their 10-day tour of Down Under, Australian magazines didn't look one bit satiated with the coverage they had done of the chubby Prince, who appeared all dressed up and happy to play.
Playing he did, and there was another thing he seemed to enjoy a lot; being dressed up in various attires and shoes. Did you say, he is just a baby? Of course, he is. But, how do you explain this trend that he has set? No sooner did he appear in those creations by London-based designer Rachel Riley's dungarees, sailboat overalls, blue cardigan, striped polo shirt on different occasions sporting pair of 'prewalkers', it set the online sales of these products on fire! So much so that a website that sells these products had to leave a note within two hours of Prince being pictured in these, that the shoes and shirts were sold out, and customers would be notified soon as the fresh stock arrives. Whoa! Now, isn't that a totally new economy?
People magazine may have declared peace with celebrity baby coverage, as far as the paparazzi is concerned. No stalking, no following, no hiding in the bushes, no lying underwater or walking around in the park to click an unanticipated picture of celebrity babies. Whatever shall be published, will be done in an appropriate manner, with the cooperation of parents and those pictures WILL be sanctioned ones. Well, well, well. We know we can trust those words, but who will quench the thirst of the world that's hungry for celebrity babies' pictures?
Among the celebrity children who have actually caught the fancy of fashionistas, to the extent that their dresses are appreciated, applauded and sometimes berated, are those whose mothers have been known for their terrific sense of fashion. Some of them have even competed with each other, not literally though, to win a top slot over another celebrity child. For example, in 2011 Suri Cruise (daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes) had won the appreciation of fashion police with her choice of clothing and appearance against Harper Beckham (daughter of David and Victoria Beckham) and Shiloh Jolie-Pitt (daughter of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie) and was christened the 'Most Influential Celebrity Child' in a contest run by Daily Beast. Apart from fashion, this poll had measured her 'likeability and media coverage'
Then there are other names such as Max Anthony (son of Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez), Mason Disick (Scott Disick and Kourtney Kardishan), Cruz David Beckham (of course you would know the parents!), Violet Anne Affleck (Ben Affleck and Jennifer Gardener), Haven Garner Warren (Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz) and the list goes on.
Media coverage of celebrity babies has been happening since the time media experienced a boom. There has always been an unquenchable thirst about celebrity babies among general public. In providing a peek into their lives, and that of their parents' media takes the private lives of celebrities closer to people. A baby is a baby, did you say? Well, when it is a celebrity baby, it's never that simple. Media stands testimony to that.
