A mosque in Minnesota, United States, was bombed by anti-Muslim attackers in the early hours of the morning whilst worshippers were praying inside. Despite the fact that the intent was to harm worshippers and criminal damage occurred due to the shattering of windows, Donald Trump remains tight lipped about the incident.
It is evident that this is an act of terrorism, yet the deafening silence from the US President shows the double standards when Muslims are the victims of such attacks. Why has there not been a single word of reassurance to those affected for someone who is so quick to respond when other tragedies have occurred. There has not even been so much as a tweet from Mr Trump to show solidarity or express condemnation at the incident. This further arouses sentiment that the President endorses such acts if he is not even willing to condemn it and urge people to be united.
According to Pew research an estimated 3.3 million Muslims live in America, a staggering amount to be ignored. The state governor for Minnesota, Mark Dayton stated that, "this was a criminal act of terrorism" and went onto state that, "if the roles were reversed, it would be called a terrorist attack. And that's what it is, an act of terrorism."
The refusal to even raise awareness that this was an act of terrorism against Muslims is sickening. All forms of terrorism should be dealt with in the same manner and leaders should be expected to act with the decency in establishing justice, religious tolerance which can only help to spur progression.
Anti Muslim crimes in the US has increased over the years with a weekly count of at least nine mosques being attacked within a week in the US alone. If the leaders of a country do not step up and show solidarity and religious tolerance what message does that send to the communities in the United States and around the world.
This is not the first time that President Trump has decided to remain silent on attacks carried out by extremists against Muslims. We saw the same approach of silence when there was an attack on Finsbury Park Mosque in the United Kingdom where Muslims were attacked by a vehicle that ploughed into worshippers.
The escalation of crimes against Muslims in the US and the lack of support given by Trump will ensure that the very people he is supposed to protect will only increase in feeling isolated by the Trump government. The President has to ensure that he is responsible for protecting and safeguarding people from all walks of life and cannot pick and choose what he feels is important. Every act of terror should be documented and addressed so that it can be dealt with in a way that holds the perpetrators accountable and be put to justice.
If Trump continues to remain tight lipped on any tragic incident that affects American Muslims than he only faces the responsibility of escalating the situation of anti-Muslim hate crimes.
