An Occasional Drink - Safe During Pregnancy?

An Occasional Drink - Safe During Pregnancy?

Is that glass of wine calling to you? Holding off because you're pregnant? Then you might want to ask your doctor if she thinks light drinking during pregnancy is safe.

A study in the UK found that baby boys born to women who indulged in an occasional glass of wine scored better on test scores at age three. Neither boys or girls showed negative side effects from the odd glass of wine when they were tested at age 3 either.

When it comes to drinking, "light" translates to no more than one or two drinks a week. It's important to note that this is just one study and that it doesn't change current guidelines regarding pregnancy and alcohol use. In fact, critics of these findings say that the results are likely skewed by family background and socioeconomic class. This is definitely a decision to make together with your doctor.

My own doctor always asked the question, "Is it worth it?" when it came to questionable practices. It never was. But some women believe that the increasing number of restrictions on pregnant women are unnecessary.

What about you -- would you or did you drink during your pregnancy?
