ParentView: Sketchers Shape-Up Trainers

You're probably wondering why I'm reviewing a pair of trainers for a parenting website. Trainers are for workouts down the gym, and where does a busy mum or dad find the time to do that, right?

Well, that's the beauty of the Sketchers Shape-Up trainers. They're designed to be worn as you go about your day-to-day schedule, whilst subtly toning up your legs and bum. So you can walk the kids to school and, in theory, sculpt your bottom to Kylie proportions.

The basic concept of the shoes is that the unique structure of them (they're shaped almost like a rocking horse) means you work all the muscles in your legs, bum, core muscles and back. It also claims to improve the appearance of cellulite, improve posture and improve blood circulation.

I've been trying these out for the last few weeks. Here's how I got on.

First, you'll be pleased to hear they're really comfortable to wear. I actually find them more comfortable than a lot of other shoes, because the unusual shape supports the arch of the foot.

Walking in them is easy enough, and I found that I could feel my calf muscles working harder in them. The rocking motion also encourages your body to hold a straighter posture, sucking in your tummy (great for strengthening those core muscles)

Combine the trainers with a bit of daily body brushing and you'll see a marked improvement in that dreaded cellulite too.

Overall, they're a great way to tone up your lower body without too much of a lifestyle change. They're no replacement for an actual workout, but for time-strapped parents they're a useful addition.
