Wool And The Gang: Learn To Knit The Cool Way

Wool And The Gang: Learn To Knit The Cool Way

The idea of re-learning (I did once know the basics and produced one stupidly long skinny scarf for my dog in my early teens) to knit has always really appealed to me. If this year you've resolved to get a hobby other than shopping, any knitter will tell you it's creative, calming, rewarding and something to keep a person occupied and away from the biscuit tin of a cold winter evening. And if it's good enough for the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker, Julia Roberts and Scarlett Johansson...

All you need to get started. Pic: Wool and the Gang

If, like me, you've tried and failed before to re-learn solo, Wool and The Gang could be just the people you need. With online video tutorials, all-you-need starter kits and super-chic designs for knitters of all abilities, creating amazing blankets and, my personal favourite, the woolly mug-holder could now be within reach.

We spoke to the team behind Wool and The Gang to find out more:

What inspired the creation of Wool and The Gang?

Wool and The Gang founders Lisa Sabrier and Carolyn Main wanted to create a brand which was different from 'throw away fashion', something which people could create themselves and proudly wear their timeless hand-made pieces. It is the story of a family, a know-how transmitted to the next generation, re-invented and self taught.

Tell us about the importance of the 'gang' element of things?

We see our 'gang' as our community, a bond between a gang of knitters , guys and girls from 7 to 77 years old. Knitting is a relaxing past time, something which can be done with your friends, sharing stories, ideas, tips and skills. We also have our online community on Facebook and Twitter, which is another outlet for fellow knitters worldwide to be able to communicate with each other and us sharing their experiences.

Is there any such thing as a typical WATG customer?

There is no typical WATG customer - they range from 7 to 77 years old, male and female. Our NYC shop attracts an assortment of people; passers by, tourists, passionate knitters and beginners. For example, our Crazy Sexy Wool collections use chunky yarn and large knitting needles, perfect for first time knitters or experienced. We also have online tutorials on our website to help those just starting out, our aim is to be accessible to everyone.

Why do you think knitting has become cool again?

The view on knitting has changed over the years, a growing trend for people who want to create their own pieces and want a challenge. People have also become more aware of sustainable living within consumerism, you are less likely to throw away an item which you have made, but treasure it forever.

What are the best sellers on your site?

Our best seller for our winter Crazy Sexy Wool Collections are our Snood Dogg, Lula Hoop, Zion Lion Hat and Foxy Roxy Scarf. All of which are simple stitches that you can learn and knit within a week. Also, we have our summer Shiny Happy Cotton collections which use light Pima Cotton. Bestsellers are our Tala Tank Top which is a basic piece and can be worn on its own in the summer or layered in the spring. Also our Lacey Sissi Scarf includes a selection of exciting knitting techniques.
