Brits Are Among The World's Biggest Drinkers

Surely they don't mean us? According to the latest figures from the World Health Organisation the level of boozing in the UK is among the 20 highest in the world. In this country, we drink an average of 13.4ltr of pure alcohol a year - that's higher than the European average of 12.2ltr.

A unit of alcohol is 10ml, and one litre of pure alcohol contains 1000ml. So for the average Brit that works out at more than 1,300 units of alcohol a year - a figure topped only by 15 other countries. But we're still a way behind the world's biggest boozers, with the average in Moldova coming in at a whopping 19.2ltr of pure alcohol a year.

The figure is slightly skewed, however, because of the number of people in this country who don't drink any alcohol. But when you take them into consideration (14.4 of US citizens not drinking at all.
